El Videoxat
How long have you been forecasting the weather?
I´ve been forecasting the weather for 44 years. I started in 1960.

The Kyoto protocol could solve any problem about the weahter changes?
Yes, The Kyoto protocol would help to stop a bit the change. But there are countries that didn´t sign it: America is an example, also Russia.
It is very difficult to accomplish the protocol without the cooperation of the countries who didn´t sign the protocol.

Will be humans able to modify the weather at their own purposes?
Can we control the weather? no. We can see maybe when it will rain.
The big storms of the Atlantic ocean are a thousand time more big than a nuclear bomb. You think we can control that?

Two types: the military (airforce), airlines. The other are the electricity or gas company, they want to know how is gonna be the weather to preview for their companies.
People like farmers are the ones who have to know it more sure, but they don´t want to pay for it, of course.

It's true the view about the weather change on the film The day after tomorrow?
I haven´t seen the film but I´ve seen the reviews. I´m sure it is another Blockbuster movie.
We know that the story of the movie will happen, but there is another things of the movie that they are not really true. Of course the American take always everything to the extrem. It is a good movie, but just don´t believe everything.

We get a lot of rain in the Western site, but is not that much, not every day. The rain is wonderfoul, not boring. In UK it´s very pleasant because there are lots of changes in the weather.

I went to school away from home. In that times there was a lot of discipline. I didn´t like much the sports (running) so I made a meteorology club to avoid to run.
From there i went to the Met office. I could stay there in the same company but doing different jobs.
I didn´t want to go to TV or radio but they offered me, and I wanted just to be a forecaster so I had no choice.

The bests are the ones of next to the Atlantic, because there is a lot of variation. Americans are good in meteorology, in several kind: like tornados.
They are pretty good in knowing when there is gonna be a big desaster. France is also good.
You can speak with other countries of Meteorology because it is an international language. I talk with catalan forecasters, german, americans, and we can understand each other.

It is difficult to give an opinion. The publicity in the UK could be better. I didn´t hear enough publicity in my country. I am very excited about it anyway but it is a pitty that not much people away from Spain know it.

We tried many times in the UK, but the problem we have is that we think that we are scientist, but we should speak the language of the standar people so everybody could understand it. We should educate the people about forecasting, so we should use a lang.
With Global Warming: some years ago the scientists warned the people about it, but they stop warning about it. The forecasters have to warn all the time because it is a scientific fact and it is the job of the forecasters to make it know to everyone.

One word to be a good tv forecaster is personality, you should be able to shine. Thatsa the 1st thing. You don´t need really good computing. You should translate the scientific language to the people. You should have also a bit of intuition.

After a week of rain in UK, the Sahara is great. I love the Canarias, I finally convinced my wife to go to retire there. Windy, but very pleasant.
It is not getting too hot, and not too cold. From the english point of view it is the nearest point for a very pleasant weather.
I´ve just come back from a lovely trip in the Canarias.

Could you recomend us some web site where to find good weather forecast?
The BBC is the biggest and it is free. Five days ahead. More than 5 days is to much changing. You can look in the page the forecast for every place in the world. Before coming here I check in this page to see what was the weather in Bcn.

Do you think the Forum can change anything?
Yes from my point of view it has already. We have changed the actitud that they have forecasting.
In the dialof we have there will be the most important people of meteorology. Maybe there will be people really great but they cannot really speack good.
There will be a full agenda of good forecasters and scientists speaking and changing opinions, so I think we will have really good conclusions. I´m very proud to talk with that people and also that there is public listening to me and to the other meteorol.
