| The Memory Tree is an
allegorical tribute to nature, which involves the symbolic
participation of all the elements of the natural world,
including animals and the magical beings that inhabit
our forests. The performance, which lasts 25 minutes,
will be held two to four times daily at the Auditorium
of the Sea for the entire duration of the Forum (141 days
in total). |

The Comediants’ production revolves around
the universal symbology of the tree as a
source of life, magic
and fertility. Devised as a street
performance, The Memory Tree is a lively, interactive
performance which advocates the protection of the
environment, the planet's natural resources, sustainability,
and an intelligent use of the world we live in.
The production also seeks to pay special tribute
to the magical values of nature.

The performance, which will combine music, shapes,
artifacts, colors and special effects, will revolve
around a giant tree, made from iron, wood, plastic
and a variety of other materials. The production
is set in the year 2050, when all the earth’s
trees have been wiped out as a result of the “Big
Change”. A team of researchers is entrusted
with the task of creating an artificial replica
of a tree. This tree is “The Memory
Tree”, the first tree of this new
generation.

Arts Scenics, a company based in La Llagosta (Barcelona),
has been entrusted with the building of the tree,
which will consist of three different levels, reaching
up to 11 meters high. It will weigh a total of 5
tons. The first level will consist of a central
platform which will be circular and have a diameter
of 80 meters; the second level will have a diameter
of 4.5 meters, and this will be topped by 3 arms
with five additional platforms, each measuring 2
meters in diameter. The tree will be transported
to the Auditorium of the Sea for its installation
in the middle of April. |

The symbology of the tree
The tree is one of the richest and most universal
symbols that we know. Through its roots, it communicates
the surface of the earth with the underworld, and
also stretches its branches towards the sky in search
of light. It features the four elements
– water flows through its veins, its roots
stretch down into the earth, its leaves are nourished
by air, and fire can be created through the friction
of its wood. The tree is present in the symbology
of many religions, and takes on a wide variety
of meanings in different rituals. It is
also present in all cultures, and
represents concepts as varied as: fertility,
the meeting of heaven and earth,
the source of life, male
sexuality (the trunk), female sexuality
(leaves), and the roots of humankind (genealogy),
etc... |
