Those who arrive at Teatre Lliure expecting to see Mikhail Baryshnikov the dancer are in for a surprise. The Latvia-born artist is currently presenting Forbidden Christmas or The Doctor and the Patient in Barcelona, and the performance has much more to do with theater than with dance. It is an imaginative Christmas tale with a strong message and a simple stage design that is nonetheless brimming with symbolism.
The story is set in the Soviet Republic of Georgia on December 25, 1952, and its main characters are a Doctor and Chito, a patient who believes he is a car. Baryshnikov plays Chito, a sailor who goes mad from heartache and becomes convinced that his body is a car that is capable of transporting people here and there. By interpreting this character, the prestigious dancer confirms his fascinating body control and displays his ability to express himself physically, a trait that he has already shown on other occasions, and vocally, with a clear diction of the English script. The actors accompanying Baryshnikov on stage provide a considerable dose of theatrical talent and make up a quality cast to portray this story that was written and directed by the internationally renowned Rezo Gabriadze. Gabriadze's stage design includes murals and wallpaper, different pieces of furniture and raucous sound effects; a very simple design that is well complemented with musical pieces that transport the audience to the Balkans.

Forbidden Christmas or The Doctor and the Patient is a tender story that transmits the magic of Christmas Eve. If the audience finds the performance highly moving at this time of the year, during the Christmas season it is likely to make them go out onto the streets and start daydreaming.
