Festival of the Sea

Because the sea has always been a transportation link, a source of nourishment, a space for confrontations and a place where peoples have come into contact, a good part of the Forum activities will be held near the Mediterranean. The Festival of the Sea, to be held from June 11 to 14, is the Forum's tribute to the sea and all that it has meant to humankind throughout history.

Community participation

Throughout the four days of the Festival, on land visitors will have the chance to experience the fair and the market. These leisure areas will recreate the everyday aspects of life at sea through maritime professions, entertainment, and traditional art. At the market, there will be craft workshops featuring different fishing-related trades, as well as fascinating characters who will periodically burst into the market to offer a variety of performances.

The fair will offer visitors a broader, more modern overview of today's sea life: the resources, people and services involved in sea-related jobs. There will also be workshops open to the public featuring such activities as knot-tying, sailing, model-building, ropemaking, building astrolabes, exhibitions and more.

Visitors will also enjoy evenings of music that will bring them closer to the maritime world: the festival of artists and traditional sea-related music.

Barcelona, a city with over two thousand years of history on the shores of the Mediterranean, will provide the ideal setting for a discussion of issues related to the broad concept of life at sea. For four days, the Port of Barcelona will welcome a spectacular gathering of sailing ships and offer all sorts of activities related to maritime culture and the main themes of the Forum.

The Festival will feature three different kinds of ships:

Large sailing ships:

The presence of these vessels is like a traveling fair that offers the public the chance to visit boats in the Port and participate in celebrations marking their arrival and departure. The most impressive event will be the "Sails for Peace" voyage, which will take place on Sunday, June 13, from the Port of Barcelona to the Forum Port and back.

Traditional vessels:

These small and medium-sized sailboats, once used for fishing, have been recovered from the oblivion brought about by technological advances and now sail the seas as recreational craft.

Historical and classic ships:

These wooden, handcrafted boats have a unique way of sailing; their behavior at sea is quite different from that of modern ships. Due to their design and noble character, many of them could be considered works of art.
