10,500 m² of solar energy for the site

One of the clear intentions of the visionaries who designed the Forum site was to take advantage of the area's existing infrastructure in the most efficient way possible. To do this, they decided to convert the thermal power plant into a new combined-cycle plant, while at the same time adapting and integrating the Besòs sewage treatment plant into the landscape.

A large photovoltaic cell, an alternative that reduces the emission of pollutant greenhouse gases, was built to further the goal of protecting the environment. The electricity produced by this structure achieves an annual reduction in emissions equivalent to 440 tons of CO2 by replacing energy obtained by burning fossil fuels, which are limited and pollutant.

This structure is located in the Forum Esplanade and consists of a 10,500-m2 surface that captures solar energy and delivers it to the electric public utility system.

The system for capturing light energy uses monocrystalline technology and is made up of tiny silicon wafers that convert sunlight into electricity. In order to maximize solar exposure throughout the year, the panel faces south and is tilted at a 35° angle.

The definitive project for the photovoltaic plant in the Esplanade includes installing new panels on top of the future Sailing School. Once finished, this structure will provide electricity to about a thousand nearby households.

During the Forum, the enormous porticoed photovoltaic structure will provide shade for an exhibition about hybrid vehicles.
