Getting around the Forum

Forum Barcelona 2004 is developing a special transport strategy with its own vehicles in order to help participants and public get to the Forum zone, and for moving around the Forum site itself. This initiative includes three different kinds of transportation: hybrid cars, trains running on biodiesel and, for the more sporty types, the ForumBike.

Car

The Toyota Prius is the official car of Forum Barcelona 2004. A fleet of these cars—a hybrid vehicle with an electric motor as well as a petrol engine, and a specially adapted body design—will serve the event throughout the Forum period.

The agreement with the car manufacturer is based on the fact that the principles and values that underpin the Forum coincided with the aims and philosophy of Toyota: reducing distances, eliminating barriers and bringing cultures closer together. Day after day, Toyota demonstrates its commitment to the values it shares with the Forum, especially with the environment.

Since October 15, the direction of the Forum has had 10 Toyota Prius at its disposal, and at the beginning of November another five Toyota cars, in three different models, were delivered, all with diesel engines: two RAV4s, one Land Cruiser and two Previa.

However, the majority of the fleet will arrive between January and April of next year: 16 Toyota Prius in January and an additional 30 Toyota Prius at the beginning of April, plus 14 Toyota Previa (7-seater hatchbacks with diesel engines).

Train

The Forum will have 4 trains, each one with 3 carriages, carrying up to 60 passengers each. These trains will provide a permanent service on two different routes within the Forum site: one from the Plaza of Gatherings to the Port Captain’s Office, and the other from the Plaza of Gatherings to the Auditorium Park.

The purpose of these trains is not to offer a “guided tour” of the site, but to provide a more comfortable means of transport between the Forum entrance and the more distant areas, and the trains are especially intended—and adapted for—those groups of people who will need them most, such as people with limited mobility, seniors, young children or people with some disability.

The expectation is that the trains will transport up to 10,000 people each day.

The trains will have a motor running on biodiesel and all of the maintenance and servicing of the trains will be carried out using environmentally friendly processes and materials.

ForumBike

The Forum will make a fleet of around 400 bicycles available to people visiting the event. There will be 5 different rental points around Barcelona: Sants railway station, the Forum, Plaça Catalunya, the Columbus monument, and a fifth point that will be at Plaça Espanya or at one of the city’s beaches.

One of the advantages of this transport option is that visitors will be able to come to the Forum by bicycle and leave in the evening by public transport without having to return the bike to the rental point.

The aim of the Forum organization is to provide Barcelona with a consolidated transport system that will allow people to get from place to place around the city in an environmentally sustainable way. It is also intended to connect all of the rental points via bicycle lanes, in order to make the system more convenient.
