The Institut d’Estudis Catalans hosts a symposium on the renovation of cultural policies in the European Union as part of the Forum

September 16, 17 and 18 the de Institut d'Estudis Catalans will host "The renovation of Cultural Policies in the European Union" organized as part of the Eurocongrés 2000- as an associated event of the Forum Barcelona 2004.

The symposium will strive to bring cultural development of diverse European cultures together and establish a basis for an enriching intercultural dialogue that reinforces the common legacy and steers toward wider production and projection. The session will deal with issues such as identities and cultural diversity in the European Union; cultural policies from the perspective of autonomous or state governments; multiculturalism in Europe and renovation of EU cultural policies, among others.

On of the main goals of the symposium is to create the Permanent Secretariat of European Cultures and Museum-Space where contributions from all European cultures will be made like the testimony and reaffirmation of shared European culture.

The meeting will open Thursday, September 16 at 9:00 am, chaired by parliamentary president Ernest Benach, accompanied by president of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, Josep Laporte, director of the office of the European Commission in Barcelona, Josep Coll, and executives directors of the Eurocongrés, Joan Amorós and Denís Mallet.

The opening congresses on "European Union: Cultural and Policies" will be chaired by the head of Patronat Pro-Europa, Anna Terron, and former president of the Catalan Parliament Joan Rigol.

Caterina Mieras, cultural councilor of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia; Carles Solà, councilor of universities and research for the Autonomous Government of Catalonia ; Josep Borrell, president of the European Congress; Joan Clos, mayor of Barcelona and president of the Forum; Josep Laporte and Robert Lafont and Joan Triadú, presidents of the Eurocongrés.
