 Cities - Corners

International Convention Center of Barcelona

The exhibition "Cities - Corners" is a tribute to cities that embody the strength and drive behind their social, economic, cultural and political functions in their material nature, with corners being the main point of reference.
In this exhibition, reflecting on points of intersection and corners leads us to reflect on contrast, consensus, conflict and commonality in difference: the true nature of urban life. This exhibition shows the visitor how encounters, intersections and interchanges, surprises and options, fear and conflict, milestones and references all materialize at corners. Ultimately, it portrays urban corners as illustrations of the diversity of cultural and geographical conditions.

1. Corners of stone:
In this section, the visitor begins by strolling through and recalling well-known places from around the world, defined and recognized by their corners (Picadilly in London, Times Square in New York, Deux Magôts in Paris, Bund/Nanking in Shanghai, etc.). Corners of merit, which illustrate the value of good architecture, will also be represented (Carson-Pirie-Scott in Chicago, Flatiron in New York, Club Zuev in Moscow, Amstel's in Amsterdam, La Pedrera in Barcelona, Michaelerplatz in Vienna, Bonjour Tristesse in Berlin, Chilehaus in Hamburg, Kavanagh in Buenos Aires, Shizuoka in Tokyo, etc.).

2. People's corners:
A spectacular audiovisual montage will demonstrate how interchanges involving different people and activities may be the result of being in the same place at the same time (corner stores, markets, bus stops, airport lobbies), redundancy or the overlap of identical functions (overlapping transportation, transfer points) or conflict (intersections as points of indecision, danger, turning points where surprises await us: struggle, competition, violence and contrast are also found at corners).

3. Corners and more corners
This section deals with the conceptual origin of the city as a grid of corners. It will be the most sophisticated part of the exhibition, featuring original historic maps, paintings and engravings related to this topic. Famous models of cities such as Havana, Stockholm, Berlin, Strasbourg, Madrid and Washington, etc., will also be on display.

4. Macrocorners
The biggest of the new emerging metropolises are large-scale world corners where population flows and activities cross paths. This part of the exhibition examines how ever-expanding megacities, such as Bombay, Mexico City, Cairo and Istanbul, draw their strength and character precisely from the fact that they constitute a manner of crossroads at the global level.
