The Forum of Local Authorities approves the Agenda 21 for Culture and passes the Barcelona Declaration

The Fourth Forum of Local Authorities (FLA) of Porto Alegre for Social Inclusion who met in Barcelona on May 7th and 8th, have brought the meeting to a close today with the unanimous approval of the Agenda 21 for Culture. The Forum of Local Authorities approved the Barcelona Declaration in which more than 300 cities from 44 countries from all over the world participated.

The Fourth Forum of Local Authorities of Porto Alegre ended its sessions today after two days of work that brought together more then 120 mayors from all over the world and a thousand participants in Barcelona. The crowded conference held this afternoon at the Forum Site’s Convention Center, was presided over by the Mayor and President of the Forum, Joan Clos, and Ferran Mascarell, Councilor of Culture of Barcelona’s City Hall, Joao Verle, Mayor of Porto Alegre, and Marta Suplicy, President of the Association of United Cities and Local Governments participated.

Agenda 21 for Culture and the Barcelona Declaration of the Fourth Forum of Local Authorities in Barcelona were discussed and approved during this conference. The two documents were approved amid applause from the public at the closing ceremony.

The Mayor of Porto Alegre, Joao Verle, emphasized the special meaning of the FLA conference in Barcelona after constituting in Paris from May 2 to May 5, the organization that will join the network of cities of the World Federation of United Cities (FMCU) and the International Union of Local Authorities (IULA) into a new organization of united cities and local governments. Verle insisted on the city’s role ¨as a space for the mediation of conflicts and the encouragement of a culture for peace.¨
