Arturo Pérez-Reverte (Writer): I'm not trying to be a reference, what's important is that the reader confronts the text

Arthur Pérez-Reverte discussed his disagreement with the theory of writers as moral references for society
Writer Arturo Pérez-Reverte said, “I want to tell stories, transmitting my interpretation through my point of view which is sometimes that of the novel and sometimes more personal." Pérez-Reverte also pointed said, "I'm not trying to be a reference, what's important is that the reader confronts the text."
Pérez-Reverte added that, “once I write a book, the reader projects his ideas and thus my book is their book."
The author of Territorio Comanche said that, “I write in part because they pay me and readers read me because they want to, I don't want to reference for anyone." “I'm a loyal mercenary to myself, my hobbies, loves and hate."
Although, Pérez-Reverte said that “a reference like Saramago is needed." The writer explained that, “literature is something complex and ambiguous in relation to moral responsibility. There are total sons of bitches who are remarkable writers”, said Pérez-Reverte.
According to Pérez-Reverte, “a committed writer must be consistent and often they over explain themselves, and that that a fairly intelligent reader can't understand does not exist."
Pérez-Reverte criticized that fact that “often commitment comes out of lack of talent." The writer explained that, “there are many writers linked to political parties and the press and they are always at debates, conferences, on television programs." Pérez-Reverte said that, “there are also many groups of power that float around writers and thus makes use of writers and readers. Often it's the readers who project commitment on the work of an author."
“When people as me how I can write a book every two years I respond that I have free tie because I'm not touring around from one debate to another," he said. He added, "I don't want people to expect the same thing from me as from others."
The writer used the examples of his book La reina del sur about a woman dealer. The writer was criticized for this and said, "I no longer consider the morality of characters because I write books from within not from outside." “And if were in favor of drug dealing? Would my work have less literary merit? Having ideology does not make you a better or worse leader," he added.
According to Reverte “it is unfair to expect a writer to have a social and political commitment, he as a person can be left by the wayside because his novel is what should be judged." He added, “there are two books alike because every reader is different." “All readers, even the least educated, have an ideology and it is clear that they choose the book closes to it."
He thinks that writers in the media are a risking "deceiving people by getting to know the author" and added that as the saying goes 'all talk no action.' The less you know about the author the wider the meaning and more open the interpretation of the work."
“The reader is the one who spins the spider's web: he assimilate, rebuts and decides positively or negatively about the book," conlcuded Pérez-Reverte.
