Canada to participate in World Urban Forum in Barcelona

A prestigious Canadian delegation headed by ministers Joseph Fontana and Stephen Owen participate in several acts held in Barcelona on the occasion of the World Urban Forum, which is being held at the Universal Forum of Cultures– Barcelona 2004 from September 13 to 17. The next edition of the World Urban Forum will be held in two years in Vancouver, Canada.

The Canadian delegation that is participating in the World Urban Forum in Barcelona is comprised of representatives of several governmental and non-governmental organizations whose common objective is to provide solutions for the challenges associated with the current process of urban growth in a world in which over half of the population lives in cities.

Headed by minister of Labor and Housing, Joseph Fontana, and by the minister of Economic Diversification of West Canada and State Minister (Sports), Stephen Owen, the delegation will present the results of several projects carried out in Canada. It will also exchange knowledge and share practical improvements on matters regarding urbanism and sustainability with other members of the international community.

In addition, there will be a permanent stand at the Convention Center at the Forum, with active presence by the Canadian delegation, who will participate in the following activities: presentation of Canada’s role in the organization of the World Urban Forum in 2006; presentation of the study “Mobilizing National Capital for the Improvement of Insalubrious Areas: A Canadian Perspective”; presentation of a new project on the potential of urban agriculture; presentation of the project on Sustainable Cities by Canada’s Ministry of Industry.

The United Nations’ UN-HABITAT is the agency that was elected by the General Assembly of the UN to promote sustainable development in cities, both socially and environmentally, and to help set the foundations for creating an adequate space for all. Created by UN-HABITAT and held every two years, the World Urban Forum gives the international public, private and non-profit organizations, governments and experts the opportunity to come together, exchange information and experiences and better practices affecting one of the biggest challenges of the new millennium, the transition of our planet towards an increasingly urban place.
